How the RL RP System Works
RP Gains & Losses
- Win: earn RP based on MMR uncertainty & opponent skill
- Higher MMR uncertainty = larger swings early in placements
- Win streaks can temporarily increase RP earned per game
- Forfeit or disconnect counts as a loss with full RP penalty
Playlist Ranks & Season Reset
- 1v1 (Duel), 2v2 (Doubles), 3v3 (Standard) are ranked separately
- Extra Modes (Hoops, Rumble, etc.) have their own rank ladders
- Each season triggers a soft RP reset toward the distribution median
- Calibration matches required before new visible rank is shown
Frequently Asked Questions
How many ranks are in Rocket League?
Rocket League has 8 rank tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Champion, Grand Champion, and Supersonic Legend. Bronze through Grand Champion each have three sub-divisions (I, II, III). Supersonic Legend is a single tier for the top ~1% of players. Rank is determined by Rank Points (RP) earned from wins and lost from losses.
How does the Rocket League RP system work?
You earn Rank Points (RP) for winning matches and lose RP for losses. The exact amount gained or lost depends on your MMR uncertainty β newer placements have higher swings. Win streaks can temporarily boost RP gains. Your visible rank updates when your RP crosses a tier threshold. The underlying MMR is hidden and settles over time as the system becomes more certain of your true skill level.
Are ranks separate for each playlist in Rocket League?
Yes β Rocket League tracks your rank independently across 1v1 (Duel), 2v2 (Doubles), and 3v3 (Standard) playlists. A player can be Diamond in 3v3 Standard and Gold in 1v1 Duel simultaneously. Competitive Extra Modes (Hoops, Rumble, etc.) also have separate ranks.
What happens to your rank at the start of a new Rocket League season?
Each new competitive season triggers a soft reset. Your RP is partially reduced β typically pulled toward the centre of the distribution β meaning very high-ranked players are placed lower temporarily while very low-ranked players may be placed slightly higher. You must play calibration matches before a new visible rank is assigned. This avoids rank stagnation and keeps the ladder fresh.
What is Supersonic Legend (SSL) and how do you reach it?
Supersonic Legend is the highest rank in Rocket League, requiring 1800+ RP. It represents roughly the top 1% of competitive players globally. Reaching SSL requires mastery of advanced mechanics (ceiling shots, double-taps, flip resets), near-perfect rotational awareness, and consistent high-percentage decision-making. Most SSL players have thousands of hours and study professional RLCS play regularly.
