LoL Ranked System 2026
All Ranks, LP, MMR & How to Climb

Ranked is the heart of League of Legends. From Iron to Challenger, the climb is what keeps millions of players grinding. This guide covers every tier, how LP and hidden MMR actually work, how splits and resets function, and proven strategies for climbing in 2026.

All 10 Rank Tiers

LoL has 10 tiers with a total of 31 divisions. Iron through Diamond each have 4 sub-ranks (IV, III, II, I — where I is the highest). Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger are single-division, LP-leaderboard tiers.

Iron

4 divisions~3% of players

Entry level. Players are learning core concepts — last-hitting, ability combos, and map awareness are undeveloped.

Bronze

4 divisions~15% of players

Players understand basic gameplay but struggle with consistency. CSing, trading, and objective control are weak.

Silver

4 divisions~22% of players

The most populated tier. Players have decent champion mechanics but lack macro knowledge — wave management, roam timings, and team fight positioning.

Gold

4 divisions~20% of players

Above-average players. Solid mechanics and growing game sense. Players start understanding win conditions and power spikes.

Platinum

4 divisions~15% of players

Good players who understand macro concepts. Wave management, objective priority, and vision control are developing.

Emerald

4 divisions~12% of players

Strong players with well-rounded skills. Introduced in 2024, Emerald sits between Platinum and Diamond as a competitive proving ground.

Diamond

4 divisions~5% of players

High-skill players with excellent mechanics and macro. Matches are well-coordinated with strong vision play and objective control.

Master

1 tier~1.5% of players

Top-tier players with near-professional skill. LP-based leaderboard with no division system. Gateway to Grandmaster.

Grandmaster

1 tier~0.04% of players

Top ~700 players per server. Extremely high skill — many are semi-professional or academy players.

Challenger

1 tier~0.01% of players

The absolute peak — top ~300 players per server. Most are active pro players, streamers, or one-tricks with thousands of games.

How LP (League Points) Works

After every ranked game you gain or lose LP. Reaching 100 LP promotes you to the next division. Dropping below 0 LP risks demotion.

Win (MMR above rank)+25 to +30 LP
Win (MMR matches rank)+18 to +22 LP
Win (MMR below rank)+10 to +15 LP
Loss (MMR above rank)-10 to -15 LP
Loss (MMR matches rank)-18 to -22 LP
Loss (MMR below rank)-25 to -30 LP

Promotion: At 100 LP you instantly promote to the next division (no more promo series since 2023). Tier promotions (e.g., Gold I to Platinum IV) also happen instantly.

Demotion shield: After promoting to a new tier, you receive a small demotion shield. You won’t demote from a new tier until you’ve lost several games at 0 LP. However, within a tier, division demotions happen after 1–2 losses at 0 LP.

Hidden MMR Explained

MMR (Matchmaking Rating) is the invisible number driving everything. It determines who you play against and how much LP you gain or lose.

How to tell if your MMR is good: If you gain 25+ LP for wins and lose only 12–15 for losses, your MMR is above your displayed rank. If gains and losses are roughly equal (~18), your MMR matches your rank. If you gain less than you lose, your MMR is lower than your rank.

Fixing bad MMR: The only way to improve your MMR is to win more games than you lose over a sustained period. Win streaks raise MMR faster than individual wins. Dodging games does not affect MMR (only LP).

Splits, Resets & Rewards

Each ranked season is divided into splits (typically 2–3 per year). At the start of each split, your rank undergoes a soft reset — your MMR stays mostly intact but your visible rank drops a few divisions.

Split Points: You earn Split Points by playing ranked games. Accumulating enough points unlocks milestone rewards: icons, emotes, champion borders, and loading screen flairs. These reset each split.

End-of-season rewards: Your final rank at the end of the season determines your reward tier — the famous Victorious skin, chromas for each tier Gold+, profile border, and ranked icon.

Queue Types

Solo/Duo1–2 players

The primary competitive queue. Solo players and duos are matched together.

Flex Queue1–5 players

Separate rank and MMR from Solo/Duo. Less competitive but allows full teams.

Tips to Climb Ranked

1. One-trick or two-trick. Play 1–2 champions in your main role and 1 backup for your secondary role. Champion mastery beats champion diversity in solo queue.

2. CS is free gold. Below Diamond, improving CS (creep score) is the single fastest way to climb. Aim for 7+ CS/min. The gold advantage from good farming outweighs most kills.

3. Die less. Every death gives the enemy gold, XP, and map pressure. Reducing deaths from 7 to 4 per game is equivalent to getting 2–3 extra kills in gold value — and it costs nothing.

4. Play around your win condition. Identify who on your team is strongest and play to enable them. If your ADC is fed, peel for them. If your top laner is 3/0, group around their split push.

5. Dodge intelligently. Dodging loses LP but not MMR. If you see a clearly unwinnable lobby (autofilled players, one-tricks off-role, toxic behavior in champion select), a dodge saves you 15–20 minutes and preserves your MMR.

6. Review VODs, not op.gg. Stat sites tell you what happened but not why. Recording your games and reviewing deaths, missed CS, and missed roams teaches you patterns your stats never will.

Ranked vs Pro Play

Solo queue and pro play are fundamentally different games. Champions that dominate ranked (assassins, split-pushers) are often weak in competitive due to the lack of team coordination in solo queue. Conversely, pro staples like Azir and Aphelios require team play to function.

Most professional players maintain accounts in Challenger or high Grandmaster on their regional server. However, reaching Challenger does not guarantee a pro career — team play, communication, and mental resilience are equally important.

FAQ

How many ranked tiers are there in League of Legends?▾

League of Legends has 10 tiers: Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Emerald, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger. Iron through Diamond each have 4 divisions (IV, III, II, I). Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger are single-division, LP-based tiers with leaderboard cutoffs.

What is LP in League of Legends?▾

LP (League Points) are the visible points you gain or lose after each ranked game. You need 100 LP to promote to the next division. Wins grant 15–30 LP depending on your MMR relative to your rank. At 0 LP, losing triggers demotion (with a small shield for recently promoted players).

How does MMR work in LoL?▾

MMR (Matchmaking Rating) is a hidden number that determines your lobby strength and LP gains. If your MMR is higher than your displayed rank, you gain more LP per win and lose less per loss. MMR adjusts based on wins, losses, and the relative strength of opponents — streaks accelerate changes.

How do placement matches work in LoL?▾

At the start of each ranked split, you play provisional games (typically 5–10) with accelerated LP gains. Your starting point is based on your previous season MMR with a soft reset — usually placing you a few divisions below your end-of-season rank. Winning placements places you higher.

What are ranked splits in LoL?▾

Each season is divided into splits (typically 2–3 per year). At the start of each split, ranks undergo a soft reset. Splits provide milestone rewards (icons, emotes, borders) for accumulating Split Points by playing ranked games. Your final rank at season end determines your end-of-season rewards.
